Tools You Need For Your First Shop

Here's a great question from one of our readers: "Given a $1000 budget, what tools would you recommend for a beginner in woodworking?"

This question is about a beginner setup in woodworking as opposed to carpentry. The goal is to make basic functional furniture in a city.

Specifically, what tools and brands are most necessary to get started woodworking with a $1000 initial budget.

These are the tools I'd recommend for basic fundamentals and for building simple small crafts

Chisels

Irwin Marples Blue Chip Chisels ($70)
There are lots of specific use chisels you could add over time, but I don't think you can skip the basic set.

Hand Planes
I have an antique Miller Falls #4 right now, which cost me $40. I had to spend hours cleaning it up and tuning it, and I think you'll have to do the same with most new hand planes too.

I'd like to get a #7 or #8 plane and a scrub plane first, and then add more specialty planes as I learn how to use them. (If I had the money, the space, and a dust collection system, I'd probably get a jointer and a planer.) I'm expecting to pay at least $100 for the larger #7 or #8 plane, and hopefully around $20 or less for the small scrub plane.

This is one category of tools where the saying, "they don't make them like they used to" seems to be especially true. At least, that's what my instructor told us. I think you can buy nice, new hand planes, but they're very expensive.

Spokeshave

Kunz151 Flat and Round Bottom Spokeshaves ($27)

Sharpening System for Hand Tools

Japanese 1200/8000 Combination Water Stone ($35)
G9650 9" x 12" x 3" Granite Surface Plate, 2 Ledges ($30)
Somax No 22 Honing Guide ($12)

You'll go through LOTS of sandpaper when you're initially tuning your hand tools. I think you should expect to spend at least $100 on sandpaper. But the good news is that you only have to go through the flattening process once, and then you're just working on maintaining your edge.

Hand Saws

Japanese Gyokucho Dovetail Saw for Fine Work ($42)
Coping Saws ($5)

Marking and Measuring

Engineering Squares (set of four for $30)
Robert Larson Combination Squares ($9)
Back Channel Dovetail Markers (depends; you could also try making these)
Marking knife
Rosewood & Brass Marking Gauge ($30)

Clamps
I think the rule is that you can never have enough clamps. I only have four bar clamps, two speed clamps, and a couple of cheap C clamps.

Power Tools

Table saw
Band saw
Mitre saw
Jig saw
Drill press
Corded drill
Cordless drill
Orbital sander

Plan Your Project, Woodworking Tips For Beginners

Plan Your Project.

Last but not least, having a plan and a drawing of your project beforehand will really make for a smoother experience.

Planning will also help with budgeting your time and money and will also help with making sure you are getting all of the supplies required for the project.

Mapping out your project will help foresee any issues with the assembly of the project while allowing for any adjustments to be made prior to assembly.

If you wait until then, you risk a loss of materials and your time.

It is also a good idea to think about what tools you will need for the project.

Planning this part out will help avoid getting to a point in your project where you need a tool and don’t have it.

This will delay your project and push back your timeline potentially costing you more money.

Use a Jig, Woodworking Tips For Beginners

Use a Jig.

Whether you are making pocket angle holes or just installing cabinet pulls, a jig is a great time saver.

Using a jig gives you a template for consistent and even holes on different pieces of wood.

A nice example of using a jig is when installing cabinet pulls on your kitchen cabinets.

If you are able to make an angle jig that matches the corners of your cabinet, you can pre-drill the hole in the same spot each time.

This eliminates the time you would spend measuring and marking each spot.

Use a Stop-Block, Woodworking Tips For Beginners

Use a Stop-Block.

The stop block is a quick way to make precise cuts on boards when you are cutting multiples of the same size.

The stop block can be secured to a saw to set the length of board you need to cut.

Once set, you can butt the pieces of wood that need to be cut right up to the block to get the same cut every time.

This makes for a quick and accurate method of cutting multiple boards.

Pre-drill Screw Holes, Woodworking Tips For Beginners

Pre-drill Screw Holes. When using a screw to attach a piece of wood to a surface pre-drilling the holes is a good idea.

Depending on how thick the wood is or how close you are to the edge, you can risk the board splitting from the pressure.

Having a board split on you during assembly is one of the most frustrating things about being a woodworker.

By pre-drilling the board with a hole slightly smaller than the screw will eliminate this issue.

One key thing to keep in mind is to use a countersink screw head.

The countersink feature allows the for a slightly larger opening at the top of the bit.

This will widen the pre-drilled hole to allow the screw head to be recessed in the board.

Failure to use a bit like this may lead to a cracked board even with pre-drilling.

This bit will also give you the option to plug the hole to hide the screw head.

Know Your Wood, Woodworking Tips For Beginners

Know Your Wood. There are many different types of wood with different characteristics.

Knowing the different types of wood, how to care for and treat it, and how it will react in different environments is key.

Each type of wood will have a different moisture content. The amount of moisture will affect how stain, paint, and glue takes to it.

This is key because if you stain a piece of oak and a piece of pine with the same color stain, you will yield different results.

The wood will take the stain differently and show a different color.

Traditional Bookcase Plan

Here’s a project that’s a lot easier than it may look and when completed provides a sturdy, great-looking place for your favorite books.

• It’s simple to build because all the pieces are screwed together, and store-bought moldings artfully cover the screwheads. There are no dado or dowel joints.

• After studying the measured drawing, you can adjust the length, depth or height to suit your specific needs. You can also use a different wood besides the oak or pine recommended in this project.

This bookcase gives intermediate woodworking students the opportunity to learn a number of important, basic skills, including measuring, cutting, marking, drilling, gluing, clamping and mitering. And after you build the bookcase, you’ll learn how to apply stains and finishes to protect the wood and keep it looking beautiful.

A Stool, Suggested First Projects

Chairs scare a lot of woodworkers but they don’t have to be complex. A stool can be build with square joinery much like a box but often times these forms require angles off square and usually compound angles.

What you will find with hand tool work is that compound angles cuts are made exactly the same as square cuts. Layout the line and saw or plane to it. A stool can be built using nothing but mortise and tenons, or you could choose to make round tenons with wedges. You will also invariably need to glue up a panel for the seat and therefore get experience with another essential skill. Or consider the iconic Shaker step stool which just comes down to dovetail work and making panels.

If you think hard enough about the “required elements” I list above you could probably come up with another project to attempt too. This is the beauty of woodworking in that we can choose to build whatever we want and customize it however we want. It is this freedom that excites so many of use about this craft and will keep pulling you back in.
